In Japan: Ara

Grey-blue to grey-brown above, white below, small scales; slender body, pointed head, protruding lower jaw. Available all year round, but landings peak in mid-winter. Average weight 6kg, ranging from 3-20kg, 1.4-1.8m long.

Neadactylus macropterus

In Japan: Shimakurodai, Fuedai

Colour varies according to locality, from silvery blue green to silvery black and with a distinctive black shoulder band. Deep bodies, one elongated pectoral fin, small mouth, thick lips, moderate scales. Catches increase between February and June. Average length 30-40cm, average weight 1.8kg.

In Japan: Aozame Aobuka

Blue to blue-grey above, white below, average size 2-3m, game fish often taken when trolling for Marlin. Sold as fillets in Japan.

In Japan: Yoshikirizame

Back indigo blue shading to bright blue sides, white underside. 2-3 metres long.

Sea Perch

Sea Perch

Helicolenus percoides

Pinky-grey striped fish with large mouth. Grows to about 50cm in length and lives for about 40 years.
